Sangeet Songs: The Group Dance

Sangeet Songs- Group Dance songs for 2015

As the rest of us start to wonder how much longer we can pull off wearing the same anarkali over and over again with different shawls (is wedding season on in full swing or what!), brides all over the country are wrapping up last-minute preparations for their early 2015 wedding. Sangeet practices have begun in every city, and irrespective of which Singh (Honey or Arijit) you’re a fan of  - the Sangeet is your favourite function. Well, unless you’re my husband and dread having to dance with complete strangers who you’re forced to call family three nights in a year. (Right? Righttt?)

If you’re preparing for a close relative or friend’s wedding, you would’ve experienced (or are about to) the Group Dance Song Agreement Situation, or as it’s more commonly known as Which Freakin’ Song Can We Get 8 People To Agree To Dance On Together? It’s hard reaching a consensus. But fret not, here’s what should you do - immediately refer them to thedelhibride’s favourite list of songs for groups to dance on. Problem solved. After all, it IS expert approved! *wink wink*

Note: As I mentioned in my earlier post, these are MY current favourites.

Sangeet Songs: The Group Dance

For Hardcore Bollywood Lovers

London Thumakda | Queen

Duh. Definitely the best one this season.

One Two Three Four | Chennai Express

It doesn’t get more upbeat than this!

Punjabi Wedding Song | Hasee Toh Phasee

Embrace your inner Punjabi! Haha - just kidding. A slightly “less hectic song”, this one sounds typically Bollywood with it’s tunes. It took me some time to warm up to it (the title threw me off), but it’s actually a pretty cool option.

For Those Who Are Too Cool To Do The Thumka

Aunty Ji | Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu

My family & friends did a surprise flash mob to this song on my Sangeet, because they knew how much I LOVED it. 2 years on, I still can’t get my feet to stop tapping whenever this song comes on! FANTASTIC group dance number!

For The Couples Group Dance

Desi Girl | Dostana

Of course! SO, SO, SO good for a group dance where you have an equal number of boys and girls. My husband and I danced on this at our Sangeet with my cousin and his wife. TOO. MUCH. FUN.

If you’re looking for an INCREDIBLE choreography for this song, check out this video ->

We found it on YouTube over 4 years ago, and back then we thought “Ahhh! This is wayyy too difficult for us.” But by the time my wedding rolled around, we were a more confident group. The four of us pretty much copied ALL THE STEPS, and modified it in a few places according to our capabilities. And yes - THAT GUY, right?! What mad dance skills!

For The Bride & Bridesmaids Who Want To Bring Down The House

Gangnam Style by Psy

Overdone by the boys? Yes. By girls? WITH the bride? NO! It’ll be a hit. Guaranteed!

Lungi Dance | Chennai Express

My cousin danced on this with her sister at her Sangeet, and it was hands down the best performance of the night! A little bit of a spoiler? I danced on this with my school buddies at my best friend’s Sangeet a month back. Sunglasses et al!

For Boys Who Know How To Shake A Leg

Badtameez Dil | Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Hands Down THE Ultimate Song for the Groom to Dance on With His Boys

Baby Doll | Ragini MMS 2

DON’T. Resist it. Just do it.

Coolness quotient: 11/10

Take It Easy, Maaan!

These are just suggestions. Please don’t take the process of song selection so seriously (unless you’re a family of choreographers). The fun lies in dancing on songs YOU love, the ones YOU will enjoy dancing on. Don’t keep your mind closed with “no no, this song is only good for “group” or “couple”. Arre dance on whatever you feel like. It’s not a World Dance Championship Finale, it’s your Sangeet. It’s meant to be something your family has a good time at. Forget dance steps, dance on songs everyone is probably sick of hearing - doesn’t matter!

And just FYI, dancing on songs people expect you to dance on actually makes it a little boring. Try adding ONE song that’s not played at every Sangeet function (make your parents dance on Anu Malik with funny gestures and expressions) OR make the boys dance on a song no one expects them to dance on (*coughcough*BabyDoll*cough*)

What are you favourite group songs to dance on this year?

Hey Shinjini, this is a great list put together. But i think you should do one every six months. Like right now, i feel no wedding would be complete without Banno tera Swagger! or Abhi to party shuru hui hai. :)
