Out of the 80+ designers who showcased at Lakme Fashion Week, only a handful created lehengas I loved. This didn’t come as a surprise because the Summer Resort edition doesn’t really scream bridal, and since lehengas are essentially wedding wear, there were limited options to pick from anyway. Here are the few I loved most for summer and beach weddings.
Ridhi Mehra
This mint green lehenga, by one of my favourite designers, has so much to love - the romantic colours, the recreation of Sheesh Mahal elements (those look like windows of the mahal, don’t they?) and all the beautiful mirror work, thread work and aari embroidery.
Where to wear? Look like a princess in this Mahal-inspired lehenga on your Engagement or Reception. If it’s your sibling’s wedding, you can also pull this off on his or her Sangeet or day Wedding function.
SVA by Sonam & Paras Modi
Pale blue = lehenga heaven for someone like me!
Where to wear? Strictly for the bride only. To be worn on either her day wedding (if she wants to experiment with colour) or her Reception.
Marg by Soumitra
I love the peachy shade, and the lehenga is alright - but what I love is that sequinned dupatta. Sequins were thrown around throughout Lakme Fashion Week, and I have to confess - my love affair with sequins began over a year ago. *sheepishly grins* It’s not something I’m proud of, considering I’m quite anti-bling, but if it’s bling done right then I find myself irrationally drawn towards the sparkle. Damn you, Sabya.
Where to wear? Aapki shaadi only, please.
Payal Singhal
Are these lehengas? Or maxi skirts and crop tops that can be worn as lehengas? Looks like we just asked this question a few weeks ago, didn’t we? Payal Singhal’s collection was also based on Sheesh Mahal (popular mahal at LFW!) and these were two of my favourite outfits from the show. Pretty, fun and girly.
Where to wear? Your Mehendi, or to a friend’s wedding.
Anushree Reddy
I’ve already done an entire post on her show - it was my absolute favourite from all 45 LFW shows! I’m just going to pick up what I wrote from that post and add it below, so that you have all the information on the best lehengas in a single place.
This is one of the heavier ones from the show. A little blingy, but still amazing. And I love how the blush pink adds a touch of colour to the ensemble.
Where to wear? Your Engagement, Sangeet or Reception. As long as someone allows the bride to wear white (when are we getting over this 1000 year old tradition, by the way?) I wouldn’t recommend this for a wedding guest, as it’s a little too heavy for a guest; unless you’re the bride or groom’s sister.
A raw silk lehenga with a touch of embroidery on its border and blouse, and a hint of pink peeking from underneath the skirt? This is exacty the kind of lehenga that floats my boat.
Where to wear? Your best friend’s summer wedding. Or your sibling’s Sangeet!
The skirt, with its large motifs, is Anushree’s signature style of lehenga. Nothing we haven’t seen before. But paired with the star-sprinkled lavender blouse, it’s a refreshing new take that I loved!
Where to wear? Your Sangeet or Reception. Definitely a very pretty option for a grand Reception.
The colours, that stunning floral print (with peacocks!) – I loved everything about this lehenga. It’s subtle, with a tinge of bling at the border and on the blouse. Major USP – you can pair that heavy blouse with a dozen other lehengas and saris.
Where to wear? Your Sangeet, if you really want to stand out. Or, to your best friend’s wedding.
