How I Styled 1 Anarkali in 3 Different Ways this Wedding Season

13 Jan 1 Anarkali Styled 3 different ways to wear to weddings

Indian wear is expensive. Or should I be saying, my tastes are expensive? Either way, most anarkalis I love don’t start below Rs.15,000 (at minimum!) and just a set of unstitched suit fabric in raw silk costs Rs.8,000. Of course, I still go on a manic hunt every time to find something more reasonable, but the fact no one can deny is - ethnic clothes cost a helluva lot these days! Which is why, when you have bought something, you want to get all the use out of it you possibly can.

I have one anarkali in my wardrobe that I love so much, I wore it to 4 different wedding events last winter. But when you’re wearing the same outfit over and over again, you want to style it differently each time, however slightly, so that it doesn’t look the exact same over and over again. 28 Outfits You Can Wear to an Indian Wedding (that are NOT anarkalis!)

16 Dec 28 Outfits you can wear to an Indian wedding - not anarkalis

A cousin called me up recently, and boy oh boy, was she annoyed. “What’s with these anarkalis, man? That’s all everyone wears all the time. They don’t even suit my body! Only slim and tall women can carry off anarkalis, but that’s all that seems to be available for the entire Indian population to wear. Aren’t there any other options?!”

Oops. Since I love anarkalis, that’s pretty much all I talk about here on the blog. And since I don’t see the “trend” fading away any time soon (or ever?) that’s all I stock up on. My wardrobe has only 3 things to wear to Indian weddings - a dozen anarkalis, handful of straight cut suits, and saris I wear thrice a year. Those lehengas? Yeah, well, I’ll re-use them when my waist size is back to 26. Which might be never…*gazes longingly into the distance remembering my pre-wedding body* *wipes tear off cheek*

3 years back, there weren’t a whole lot of other options available for the Indian girl. But cut to 2015, and the world is your oyster, baby. Capes, shararas, palazzos, crop tops, dhotis, cigarette pants, jackets, high-low kurtas, drapes - the silhouettes are endless! Continue reading

TDB Loves: Shahpur Jat’s Abhinav Mishra & His New Collection

9 Sep Abhinav Mishra 2015 new collection at AZRA

I spotted a lehenga online last year, and it stopped me in my (digital) tracks. It was everything I always look for in a lehenga - light, pretty, and reasonably priced. And it was marked as an Abhinav Mishra design. Who is Abhinav Mishra? And why hadn’t I heard of him?

A quick Google check showed his store was located at Shahpur Jat. Interesting, I thought, that there are still stores in Shahpur Jat I don’t know about. I’ve kept track of his work for over a year now, and watched him produce outfit after outfit that I’ve loved. Consistently. I wasn’t surprised when Pernia’s Pop Up Shop introduced his designs to their online store in June this year. In fact, it gave me the confidence to start recommending him to brides. Getting listed on Pernia’s, after all, is a mark of approval on a designer’s quality.

Last Friday, I finally made my way into his Shahpur Jat store to look at the clothes in person, and see if it lives up to the hype that has had a whole year to build up in my head.

Inside Shahid Kapoor’s Wedding Reception in Mumbai

13 Jul Kriti Sanon selfie with Shahid & Mira

Have you been watching Jhalak Dikhla Ja Reloaded? I’m only watching it to watch Shahid Kapoor. But while gazing at that adorable smile, I also noticed how much the dancing has improved. Considering this was the very first show of the season, it’s unbelievable how amazing some of the choreography and dance already is! I cannot wait to catch the rest of it.

While I’ve just heard that Shahid might only judge the first 8 episodes, I can’t be sure if that will really happen. I sure hope not! I’ve been depending on Jhalak to keep me from falling into post-wedding blues now that Shahid’s wedding festivities have wrapped up. Yes, that’s right. It’s over, people. The show’s over. And it’s surprising how depressing it is. I will miss all the excitement - What will Mira wear? Which designer will create the outfit? How will Shahid look? Although that last one is a stupid question. Obviously, he will look good. He’s Shahid!

Maxi Skirts: The New Budget Lehenga?

25 Feb

If you’re looking for light lehengas that are also light on the pocket, I have an idea for you. I’m sure I’m not the first person in the world to have had this inspired thought, but last weekend I saw this picture of a maxi skirt & crop top -

Fuschia embroidered maxi skirt with nude crop top

and thought to myself, “This is so pretty, can’t it double up as a lehenga?”

Waittaminute *quickly scrolls down to check price*

Yes, it can!

The crop top and skirt were priced at ₹26,000 - the average these days to buy a light lehenga by an even slightly known designer. Was I onto something?

Were there other maxi skirts out there that could double up as light lehengas?

My Best Friend's Wedding Secret Sangeet Outfit Lust List Revealed

Deciding what to wear on your best friend’s Sangeet is not as easy as it should be. Or, is it - and we just make it complicated?

Either way, you know you don’t want to out-do the bride, but you also don’t want to look like the lost daughter of that Aunty who the bride last met in 1993 and has turned up only because her mom guilted her into it with that dreadful line we’re all akin to falling for “Beta, you never come with us anywhere.”

Basically, you want to lie somewhere in between the “Who does she think she is? The bride?!” and the “Didn’t anyone tell her she was attending a Wedding?!” Continue reading

On Mehendi

Footwear is the only part of the look that’s still a big fat questions mark. I need to buy pretty jootis. Continue reading

New section on the blog: Wedding Guest Style

22 Apr

Whenever I attend a wedding, I’m always looking at what other wedding guests are wearing. Why? Because I need ideas! Yes, I’m newly-ish married so I have tons of Indian wear in my cupboard. But like I said in my last post, it’s a confusing world out there for wedding guests. What should we wear to a wedding? Something that’s a fine balance between looking wedding-worthy, and yet not bride-worthy. But where are these clothes? And what do they look like?

I had been tinkering with the idea of adding a new section to the blog for quite some time now.

Something like a Street Style section - but for wedding guests!

You know, where you can see what REAL wedding guests wore to REAL weddings, so you know what works out well ensemble-wise for guests in REAL life.

I let go of the opportunity many times over the last few months, till I finally managed to work up some courage and go speak to complete strangers at the Sangeet I was attending last weekend!

The result?

I finally get to introduce you to a brand new section to thedelhibride -

Wedding Guest Style!

You’re a bride only once, but you’re a wedding guest forever.

If you click on the link above, it will take you to the new section.

Would love your feedback on this, dear readers! Leave your precious comments below, or on the page!
