One of my close friends from college is getting hitched this December! And yes, a lot of our recent conversations revolve around wedding planning! When she told me her proposal story, I knew I had to share it on the blog. After a few weeks of nudging (ok, more like begging and pleading), I finally managed to get her to put that day down in words. This is her story.
The M word has always freaked me out. But when I met A (let’s just call him that), I realized he’s truly a gem of a person and I could see myself spending my life with him. Our wedding date was decided, and we were all set. But I didn’t let him call me his fiancée, not unless the ring is on my finger!
He’s been living and working in Germany, while I’ve been in the UK. But we keep travelling to see each other. And for some reason – two days before we are supposed to meet, we end up having a major fight. It’s almost a ritual! This time, I travelled to Germany to visit him and the day I landed, he started to behave like an absolute jerk. He was being really weird, and I thought “the usual PMSing?” Hehe. Since this was the first time I’d ever been to Germany, he was leading the way and showing me around.
A likes to trek, so he wanted to take me to a hilltop – he said the view of the city from there is stunning. But he knew that I am not a fan of trekking, so we drove up there instead. When we reached the top, I saw a really pretty gazebo smack in the middle and the view from there was truly breathtaking. I’m pretty trigger happy, so I started clicking pictures of the view…LOTS of pictures! I was going crazy about the view! Suddenly, A looks at me and says, “I need to talk to you about something important”. I thought to myself, “Is he actually going to bring up that fight we had now? Just when we were starting to have such a great time!” Instead, he said, “I don’t want to be your boyfriend anymore. I want you to be my fiancé”. I literally started screaming, because I was not prepared for this at all. He went down on his knee and popped the question! Can you guess my first response? “Show me the ring and then I’ll decide” 😉
Of course, the ring was the most precious thing I’d ever seen and I gave him a “Yes!”
And that was just the beginning of a beautiful evening. All day, he had been carrying a backpack and when I had asked him what he was carrying for just a drive up the hill, he had said it was just his camera and a bottle of water. All lies I tell you! Out came the wine, chocolate truffles and a white tablecloth. It was the absolute best proposal I could have ever imagined.
Six months to go for my big day now. Amidst all the wedding planning, the M word still creeps up on me and freaks me out. A is quite sure I will be the runaway bride! But after a proposal like that, I am looking forward to all the surprises and joy getting married *breathes in deeply to avoid panic* to A will bring into my life.
