On Losing & Lifting Weight | Sheena’s 10 Kg Transformation

17 Aug

Sheena runs Mogra Designs, one of my favourite online boutique stores. I have never thought of her as someone who was overweight, so I was surprised when I saw her post on Facebook talking about how she had reached an unhealthy size and had struggled to come back to her ideal weight. As I read through her weight loss journey, I realised she had gradually lost 10 kgs in 5 months the “right” way. She had found what form of workout she enjoyed, figured out what eating habits suited her body and not pressurised herself into losing it all too quickly. This was exactly the kind of fitness routine I wish everyone followed, especially brides to be! I have never believed in quick-fix methods and crash diets, and Sheena’s story was precisely the kind I am always looking for to share with my brides. Here are ALL the details of her 5 month journey, straight from Sheena’s keyboard 🙂

I decided this March to get back on the fitness bandwagon. Including the inevitable struggles that come along with getting back into shape after letting go of yourself for 2 years.

In this update, I share my experience using the Apple Watch for fitness, cold-pressed juices in Delhi and the 30 Day Abs Workout Challenge all your friends are taking on.

Fitness Update: March 2015

30 Mar

3 years ago, my wedding date was decided. I had 8 months, to be the fittest bride I could possibly be. I began yoga classes for the first time in my life, and started eating healthy. I still gorged on cakes, but I also had more home food and completely gave up potato chips and aerated drinks. Over the first year of my married life, I slowly began to let go of all my healthy practices. I won’t go into details of the past here, mainly because you can just read about the struggles in old Fitness posts. Thankfully, we are not trees. If we don’t like where we are, we can move. We are not trees. And so I’d like to move. Get back onto the fitness bandwagon. Feel full of energy and strong again. This is the chronicling of that journey. It’s far from perfect, but that’s what change is – it’s hard, and it’s messy. And since a lot of you will be getting married in a few months time, this might help you out – as I’m starting from scratch again. Brides of 2015, welcome to my first fitness update where I started working out again after a gap of almost 2 years.

Inspirational Workout Quote

1 Jun

If you would have done your workout when you first thought of doing it, you would have been done by now

Ladies, if you’re working out for your wedding, I’m sure you have enough motivation anyway. But if you’re procrastinating and thinking “I’ll do it after an hour” or “I’ll do it in the evening after [insert lame excuse]”, this quote should get you going. Come on, you also know that if you leave it to later, the lesser the chances you’re getting it done today.

On your mark, get set, GO!

Wedding Workout Commenced!

28 May

Yup, you heard right! I have finally started my wedding workout routine.

Background – I was pretty active in school, specially basketball and dance. Did absolutely nothing in college. Started working in 2009, and with that started dance classes again – continued for next 2 years. But, for the last 6-8 months, I’ve pretty much done NOTHING. I’m lucky to have a pretty great metabolism, but for the first time in my life I want an absolutely flat stomach (for the lehengas, saris and bikinis!) and this no-exercise-only-junk-food-diet is not helping one bit.

The time has come. I know, I know, I should’ve started this 6-8 months before the wedding. Now I have only 5 months remaining. But, that’s alright – it doesnt take much to get me fit.

So, here’s what I’ve started off with – downloaded this free app called Nike Training Club on my iPad. It gives me a long list of differnet workouts to choose from, depending on my goal – losing weight, toning up, gaining strength or targetting particular areas. There are 3 levels – beginner, intermediate and advanced. I suggest anyone who wants to start a workout routine from the comfort of their home should try this out. For most of the routines you don’t need any equipment. Some of them require either a pair of dumbells, a yoga mat or a medicine ball (no idea where to get this from, YET). Today was the first day I tried the most basic workout “Shape+Sweat” and I couldn’t finish the full 30 mins of it – I got tired, AND I didn’t have the time to do a full 30 minute workout. Initially, while you’re learning the different workouts, it will take more than 30 mins to complete each, because you will need to play the video to SEE what each part of the workout entails. My main aim is to have a flat stomach, sideies include toned arms and legs. For that, I’ve heard the food you eat is MOST important, then Cardio, then strength training, and lastly – crunches (I can’t seem to recall where I read this).

So, plan of action? Minimize junk food, 2 litres of water a day, daily workouts (will include cardio sometimes) and daily crunches (increasing the number of crunches as stamina and strength go up).

Another thing I’ve done, and this is to form habits such as exercise and others – I downloaded Way of Life, a paid app on iPad. It’s AWESOME. It’s really motivating me to form great habits, and also helps me keep a track on where I am. I’ll give a detailed description of how it works in some other post, but for now just trust me and shell out the $3.99 required to download it (there is a free version as well, where you can input upto 3 habits – try it out first).

Am adding a Page called Wedding Workout Tracker to keep a track of my fitness over the next 5 months. Accountability FTW?

Edit: I just heard about Physique 57. Anybody tried it?
